California Green Medal Environment Award

Trefethen is pleased to announce that we have been honored with the California Green Medal Environment Award. The California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards provide recognition to vineyards and wineries that are leaders in implementing the three tenets of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social equity. The Environment Award winner honors “the vineyard and/or winery that best demonstrates environmental stewardship through maximized environmental benefits from implementing sustainable practices.” This award highlights our estate-grown approach to winemaking and the biodiversity and resiliency that we have built into our entire operation. Some examples of our sustainability programs include on-site water recycling, solar electricity generation, and a pilot program launched in 2021 to capture CO² from wine fermentations.

Sustainability has been a core value since Trefethen’s founding in 1968. From the beginning, the Trefethen family demonstrated remarkable foresight and, over the past many years, we have developed programs addressing energy conservation, waste reduction, sustainable sourcing, integrated pest management, responsible farming, and social equity standards. The third generation of Trefethens, siblings Lorenzo and Hailey Trefethen, continue the family’s commitment to sustainability and consistently strive to stay at the forefront of new technology and innovation. Trefethen is a member of the international group Porto Protocol, a foundation that fosters climate solutions for the wine industry, and has long been a Certified California Sustainable Vineyard & Winery, Napa Green, and Fish Friendly Farming estate.
